The Story of Ajamil – The Transforming Power of the Holy Name

Ajamil calling out Narayan at the time of death while Vishnudutas stop Yamadutas

🌼 The Story of Ajamil – The Glorious Power of the Holy Name 🌼

The story of Ajamil, described in the Puranas, teaches us the incredible power of the Lord’s Holy Name. Even if the name of God is taken unknowingly, it has the power to liberate a soul from sins.

🪔 Early Life of Ajamil

Ajamil was a Brahmin from the city of Kannauj.
From childhood, he was virtuous, well-versed in the Vedas, obedient to his parents, and a sincere devotee of Lord Vishnu.

His life was filled with righteousness, truth, and good conduct.

⚡ The Fall of Ajamil

With the passing of time, his company became corrupted.
One day, he saw a fallen woman and became attached to her.

Gradually, he abandoned the path of righteousness.
He accepted that woman as his companion and began living a sinful life.

Without caring about justice or injustice, he earned money by any means and brought it to her.

He even abandoned his parents and former wife.
From that woman, he had several children.

🌸 Naming His Son “Narayan”

Due to past good deeds or the guidance of a saint, he named his youngest son “Narayan.”

He loved this child deeply.
His heart was completely attached to this youngest son.

⏳ The Final Moment

When the time of Ajamil’s death arrived,
the messengers of Yamaraj (the lord of death) came to take him.

Terrified and overwhelmed with attachment, Ajamil loudly cried out:

“Narayan! Narayan!”

He was calling his son,
but “Narayan” is also the sacred name of Lord Vishnu.

✨ The Dialogue Between Vishnudutas and Yamadutas

As soon as the name “Narayan” left Ajamil’s lips,
the messengers of Lord Vishnu appeared.

They stopped the messengers of Yamaraj and said:

“Even if a person chants the Lord’s name once,
he becomes free from sins.”

The Yamadutas were forced to return.

The divine attendants declared,
“He has chanted the holy name ‘Narayan’ at the time of death. He is no longer a sinner.”

⚖️ The Judgment of Yamaraj

When the Yamadutas reported the incident, Yamaraj said:

“From now on, bring only those sinners
who have never uttered the name of God,
who have never heard the Lord’s stories,
whose feet have never entered a temple,
and who have never worshipped the Lord’s deity.”

🌼 Moral of the Story

✨ Even unknowingly chanting the Lord’s name can bring liberation.
✨ Remembering God at the final moment is the greatest support.
✨ True repentance and devotion can free even the greatest sinner.
✨ God is compassionate — He looks only at the sincerity of the heart.
