🙏 Introduction to Adi Guru Shankaracharya
Adi Guru Shankaracharya was a great philosopher, saint, and the founder of the philosophy of Advaita Vedanta in Sanatan Dharma. He traveled across India spreading the teachings of the Vedas and Upanishads and helped re-establish the spiritual traditions of Hinduism.
Adi Shankaracharya was one of the greatest spiritual teachers of India. He was born around the 8th century in Kalady village in Kerala. His father’s name was Shivaguru and his mother’s name was Aryamba. Both were very religious.
From childhood, Shankaracharya showed extraordinary intelligence. It is believed that by the age of eight he had already mastered the study of the Vedas.
🙏 Sannyasa and Guru Govindapada
Even in his childhood, Shankaracharya had a strong desire to become a monk. With the permission of his mother, he took Sannyasa and went to the banks of the Narmada River, where he became the disciple of Guru Govindapada.
His guru entrusted him with the great mission of spreading the philosophy of Advaita Vedanta.
🙏 Message of Advaita Vedanta
Shankaracharya gave the famous statement:
“Brahma Satyam, Jagat Mithya, Jivo Brahmaiva Na Aparah.”
This means that Brahman (the Supreme Reality) alone is true, the world is temporary, and the individual soul is not different from Brahman.
He taught people to rise above complicated rituals and follow the path of knowledge, devotion, and detachment.
🙏 Spiritual Journey Across India
Adi Shankaracharya traveled throughout India on foot and spread the teachings of Vedanta in many sacred places such as Kashi, Prayag, Badrinath, Dwarka, Puri, and Rameshwaram.
He debated with many scholars and established the philosophy of Advaita Vedanta.
One of the most famous debates was with the great scholar Mandan Mishra in Kashi. The debate was judged by Mandan Mishra’s wife Bharati Devi, who declared Shankaracharya victorious. Later, Mandan Mishra became his disciple and was known as Sureshwaracharya.
🙏 Establishment of Four Monasteries
To preserve spiritual unity in India, Shankaracharya established four important monasteries (Mathas) in the four directions of the country:
🪔 Sringeri Math (South)
🪔 Dwarka Math (West)
🪔 Puri Math (East)
🪔 Jyotirmath / Badrinath Math (North)
Through these monasteries, the tradition of Vedanta continues even today.
🙏 Teachings of Advaita Vedanta
Adi Guru Shankaracharya taught the core principles of Advaita Vedanta:
✨ Brahman alone is the ultimate truth
✨ The world is temporary (Maya)
✨ The individual soul and Brahman are one
According to this philosophy, there is no difference between the soul and the Supreme Reality.
🙏 Spiritual Writings
Shankaracharya composed many important philosophical and devotional texts such as:
🌿 Vivekachudamani
🌿 Upadesha Sahasri
🌿 Commentaries on the Upanishads
🌿 Commentary on the Bhagavad Gita
🌿 Commentary on the Brahma Sutras
🌿 Bhaja Govindam
🌿 Soundarya Lahari
🌿 Nirvana Shatakam
Through these works, he made the path of knowledge and devotion easier for people.
🙏 Mahasamadhi
It is believed that Adi Shankaracharya attained Mahasamadhi at the age of 32 in the Kedarnath region. Even in such a short life, he transformed the spiritual direction of India.
🙏 Message
The message of Adi Shankaracharya is still relevant today:
Self-realization is the path to liberation, and all spiritual paths ultimately lead to the same truth.
