Durga Ashtami Vrat – When and How to Observe the Sacred Fast

Durga Mata Mahishasura Mardini form worshipped on Durga Ashtami Vrat

Durga Ashtami Vrat: When and How to Observe 🏵️

Durga Ashtami Vrat is observed every month on the Ashtami (eighth day) of the Shukla Paksha. Before beginning the fast, check the Panchang to ensure that the previous day (Saptami) does not overlap, as performing the fast with Saptami is considered inauspicious. If it does, you can observe the fast the next day. Both Ashtami and Navami are sacred days for worshiping Goddess Durga. If both Ashtami and Navami fall together, it is considered Mahanavami and is highly auspicious.

🪔 When to Start the Ashtami Vrat

Durga Ashtami occurs every month. If you plan to start the vrat, it can be observed during any Navratri—either in Chaitra (March) or Ashwin (September). This fast is dedicated to seeking divine Shakti (power), as Goddess Durga is the ultimate source of strength and energy.

🌻 Vrat Procedure (Puja Vidhi)

✨ Begin the day with a pure bath in the morning.
✨ Perform the puja of Goddess Durga using:
🌸 Dhvaj (flag)
🌸 Pushp Mala (flower garlands)
🌸 Fruits
🌸 Sweet Paan Betel
🌸 Ghee lamp and incense (Kapoor)
✨ Offer the worship with devotion, perform aarti, and remain fasted during the day.
✨ In the evening, have a pure and sattvic meal once.

🪔 Items Required for Vrat

🌺 Sugar candy (Batasha)
🌺 Incense (Kapoor)
🌺 Clove pair (Laung ka Joda)
🌺 Cow dung lamp (Gobar Ka Kanda)
🌺 Sweet paan betel
🌺 Fruits
🌺 Flower garlands
🌺 Coconut
🌺 Red Chunri
🌺 Pure ghee lamp
🌺 Fragrant incense (Dhoop)

🌺 Which Texts to Recite During Ashtami Vrat

📿 It is recommended to recite Durga Chalisa or Durga Saptashati.
📿 If you are unfamiliar with the full text, you may also recite Chandi Stotra or Durga Chalisa, which contains 40 verses (hence called “Chalisa”) and is highly effective.

🏵️ Special Notes

🌸 This fast can be observed by women, men, and children.
🌸 Women should ensure purity and maintain proper conduct during the vrat.
