This is the sacred beginning of Tulsidas Ji’s Ramayan. You will read dohas and chaupais from time to time.

Mangalacharan Shlok

Varnanām arthasanghānām rasānām chhandasām api
Mangalānām cha kartārau vande vāṇī vināyakau

Meaning:
I bow to Lord Ganesha and Goddess Saraswati, who create letters, meanings, emotions, poetry, and all auspicious beginnings.

🌸 Ram Naam Glory

Doha 1

Bandau Ram Naam Raghubar ko | hetu krisanu bhānu himkar ko ||
Bidhī Hari Haramay Ved prān so | gun anupam gun nidhan so ||

Meaning:
I bow to the name “Ram” of Lord Raghunath. This holy name is the source of fire, sun, and moon.
It is Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva together. It is the life of the Vedas and full of divine qualities.

Doha 2

Sādar Sivahi nāi ab māthā | barnau Ram gun gāthā ||
Sambat sorah sai ek tiisā | karau kathā Hari pad dhari sīsā ||

Meaning:
Now I bow respectfully to Lord Shiva and begin telling the pure story of Lord Ram’s virtues.
I start this narration in Samvat 1631, keeping Lord Hari’s feet in my mind.

Doha 3

Sādar Sivahi nāi ab māthā | barnau Ram gun gāthā ||
Sambat sorah sai ek tiisā | karau kathā Hari pad dhari sīsā ||

Meaning:
Again I bow to Lord Shiva and narrate the holy story of Lord Ram’s virtues.
I begin this divine story in Samvat 1631 with devotion.

Doha 4

Naumi bhār bar madh māsa | Avadhpuri yah charit prakāsa ||
Jehi din Ram janam shruti gāvahin | tīrath sakal tahā̃ chali āvahi ||

Meaning:
On the ninth day (Navami), Tuesday, in the month of Chaitra, this divine story was revealed in Ayodhya.
On the day Lord Ram is born, all holy pilgrimage places come there.

Doha 5

Ramcharitmanas ehi nāmā | sunat shravan pāiy bishrāmā ||
Man kari vishay anal ban jarai | hoi sukhī jõ ehi sar parai ||

Meaning:
This scripture is called Ramcharitmanas. Just hearing it brings peace to the ears.
The mind burning in worldly desires becomes calm and happy when it rests in this sacred story.
