🌸 The Story of Shri Devaji Panda – Chaturbhuj Swami Temple near Udaipur 🌺
🌸 Devaji Panda’s Devotion and Saintly Life 💥
Near Udaipur, there is the Chaturbhuj Swami Temple. Shri Devaji Panda was the priest there. He was
not highly educated, but he performed worship with great devotion, reverence, and proper rituals.
One day, the ruler of Udaipur came to the temple at night. The night aarti had already been completed.
After putting God to sleep, Devaji had taken the garland from God’s neck and placed it on his own
head, then closed the temple and was coming out. At that moment, the Maharana arrived.
🌸 The Maharana’s Arrival and the Garland Incident 💥
Seeing the Maharana suddenly at the door, Devaji panicked and rushed back into the temple, trying to
find the garland to give him. There was no second garland that day, so to avoid making the Maharana
angry, Devaji took the garland from his head and placed it around the Maharana’s neck.
There was no time to think. All the hair on Devaji’s head was white and thick. 2–3 white hairs got stuck
in the garland and went around the Maharana’s neck.
Seeing the hair, the Maharana said, “Priest, it seems all of God’s hair has turned white!”
Devaji didn’t know what to say and fearfully replied, “Yes Maharaj, all the hair of Thakurji has turned
white.”
The Maharana both laughed and felt anger at the priest’s words. In a serious tone, he said, “I will come
myself tomorrow to see.”
🌸 Devaji’s Worry and Night-long Prayer 💥
Devaji had spoken suddenly, and now he was greatly worried. Tomorrow the Maharana would come,
and if he didn’t find God’s white hair, who knows what would happen. Devaji couldn’t sleep and didn’t
eat; tears streamed down his eyes.
He said, “My Lord, from my mouth, such words suddenly came out. You are eternally youthful, so how
can your hair be white?
Tomorrow when the Maharana sees your black hair, what will happen to your servant? What
punishment will he give me?”
Saying this, Devaji cried uncontrollably. Calling out to God and crying through the night, he did not
realize when the night passed.
🌸 God’s Grace and the Astonishing Miracle 💥
At dawn, Devaji bathed and tremblingly opened the temple doors. His heart was pounding in fear. Upon
opening the doors, he saw that by the benevolent grace, all the hair of Shri Vigrah had turned white.
Devaji’s heart was astonished—was this a dream or reality? Seeing the compassion and loving care of
God, Devaji fainted and fell to the ground.
After a long time, he regained consciousness. Tears of love and bliss flowed from Devaji’s eyes.
🪷 The Maharana’s Arrival and the Priest’s State of Mind 💥
At this time, the Maharana came to test. Seeing Devaji crying in fear, he understood that last night the
priest had told him that all of Thakurji’s hair had turned white and now he was weeping in fear.
Then his gaze fell on God’s Shri Vigrah, and the Maharana was astonished. The dark-hued beautiful hair
of Shri Vigrah was shining like silver.
The Maharana thought, “The priest must have attached white hair somewhere to show me.” He decided
to test and forcibly plucked one hair from God.
He saw that as soon as the hair was plucked, it seemed as if Shri Vigrah felt pain, and the Maharana
himself shrank. Not only that, a drop of blood came from the head and fell on the Maharana’s garment.
Seeing this, the Maharana fainted and fell to the ground.
🪷 The Maharana’s Apology to Devaji 💥
After some time, the Maharana regained consciousness. He fell at Devaji Panda’s feet and said, “Lord, I
am of low intellect. I have committed a great sin. Please forgive me. Devotees are forgiving; forgive
me, Lord. Protect me.”
Devaji embraced the Maharana while crying and said, “This is all the glory of my Lord. I was a
simpleton, a servant of the belly. Worship of God was just in name, yet my Lord was so merciful. Even
my false words pleased Him so much that to uphold my claim, He made white hair on His eternally
youthful, delicate Vigrah. I am the real sinner; I committed the offense by speaking falsely about God.”
Both Devaji Panda and the Maharana cried seeing God’s mercy. Sometimes they looked at God while
crying, sometimes at each other, both asking forgiveness for their mistakes.
🌸 God’s Command and Temple Tradition 💥
Shri Chaturbhuj Maharaj decreed: “Whoever sits on the royal throne shall not come to my temple for
darshan.”
Since then, according to this order, those who sit on the royal throne of Udaipur do not come to
Chaturbhuj Temple for darshan.
