☘️ The presiding deity of Chaturdashi is Lord Shiva. 🪔
Mahashivaratri belongs to Lord Shiva — the sacred night dedicated to Him. The fast observed on this divine night is known as Shivaratri Vrat.
“Shivalingatayodbhutah Kotisurya Samaprabha”
According to the Ishana Samhita, on this day the divine Jyotirlinga manifested. Hence, it is called Mahashivaratri.
Shivaratri Vratam Nama Sarva Papa Pranashanam |
Achandalamanushyanam Bhukti Mukti Pradayakam ||
Meaning:
The Shivaratri fast destroys all sins and grants both worldly happiness (bhukti) and liberation (mukti) to everyone.
The devotee should:
Wake up early and take a holy bath.
Apply Tripundra tilak (three lines of sacred ash) on the forehead.
Wear a Rudraksha mala around the neck.
Visit a temple and perform proper worship rituals.
Remain silent throughout the day.
In the evening, bathe again, visit the temple, and perform worship as per tradition.
Roli, moli (sacred thread), rice, betel leaves, supari, cloves, cardamom, sandalwood, incense, lamp, janeu, milk, curd, sugar, honey, fruits, flowers, lotus seeds, dhatura, bel leaves, prasad, and dakshina.
There are two famous stories associated with Shivaratri.
Once, a wealthy man, due to bad company, tried to steal ornaments from a woman performing Shivaratri worship. He was killed for this crime.
However, in order to find the right moment to steal, he unknowingly remained hungry, thirsty, and awake for the entire night — thus unintentionally observing the Shivaratri fast.
Because of this unintentional vrat, Lord Shiva granted him salvation.
On one Shivaratri, a hunter searched all day for prey but found none. At night, he sat under a tree for shelter. Beneath that tree was a self-manifested Shivling and a Bilva tree.
When he saw a deer, he plucked Bilva leaves and unknowingly dropped them over the Shivling while preparing to shoot.
The deer spoke wisely and went away alive. This happened during each quarter of the night.
As a result of this accidental worship and fasting, Lord Shiva granted the hunter liberation from worldly bondage.
If possible, one should observe the Shivaratri fast every year.
Ideally, it can be observed for 14 years, after which the Udyapan (completion ritual) should be performed.
For Udyapan:
Prepare a sacred Lingato Bhadra Mandal using rice, moong, and urad.
Establish two kalash in the center and three kalash in each of the four corners.
Place a golden idol of Lord Shiva on a copper vessel and a silver idol of Goddess Parvati over the central kalash.
Perform Shodashopachar worship and havan.
Donate a cow (godaan), bedding, and offer food to Brahmins.
Finally, take your meal and formally conclude the vrat.
The difficulty of this vrat is that ideally it should be conducted by a learned Vedic Brahmin.
Yet, its simplicity is such that rich or poor — anyone can perform it according to their capacity. Even a laborer offering simple carrots, radish, or berries with devotion can complete it.
Compassionate Lord Shiva becomes pleased with both the smallest and the grandest forms of worship.
