Sheetala Ashtami Fast Rules – 2026

Guide to observing Sheetala Ashtami fast: fasting rules, cold food offerings, home rituals, worship, and blessings of Sheetala Mata.

🌼 Sheetala Ashtami Fast Rules

🌿 On the day of the fast, wake up early in the morning and take a bath.

❌ Do not clean the house because “Basoda” itself means stale.

Keep the house as [Basoda]; Sheetala Mata holds a broom in one of her hands.

Perform the worship early in the morning, before sunrise, because after sunrise it becomes hot and the Basoda worship of Sheetala Mata is not performed.

🛕 Then prepare for the worship in front of the idol or picture of Sheetala Mata.

🍚 Offer cold (stale) food such as dry fruits, sweets, pua, puri, vegetables, lentils, rice, lapsi, curd, halwa, sweet rice, and roti. Both cooked and uncooked cooling foods can be offered.

Do not light the stove, gas, or fire in the house on this day.

🙏 Offer water, flowers, rice (akshat), and roli, and worship Sheetala Mata with devotion. Recite the Sheetala Mata Stotra and perform the night vigil (Jagran).

📖 After the worship, listen to or read the Sheetala Ashtami story.

🍛 After the puja, the family eats the same cold prasad together.

🪔 Do not light a lamp (diya) during the worship of Sheetala Mata. ❌

🌸 Tradition of Basoda / Sheetala Ashtami 🌸

📜 According to tradition:

The fast is observed across India on Chaitra Krishna Ashtami.
Purva Viddha Ashtami is considered.
The Skanda Purana mentions four types of Sheetala fasts.

Sankalp Mantra:
"Mam gehe Sheetalaroga-janitopadrava-prashamana-purvaka ayur-arogya-aishwarya-abhivriddhaye Sheetalashtami fast karishye."

Take the vow of the fast by reciting this mantra.

🥣 Cold (stale) food is offered to Sheetala Mata.
☘️ The stove is not lit, and cleaning is avoided.
🍛 Food is prepared one day before.
🍚 Offerings include curd, puri, halwa, sweet rice, pua, and other foods.

🛕 It is believed that worshipping Sheetala Mata protects the family from diseases, fever, boils, eye ailments, and epidemics.

🌼 Sheetala Mata Story 🌼

🌺 Long ago, in a town, people did not worship Sheetala Mata and ignored her importance.

👵 One day, Sheetala Mata took the form of an ordinary old woman and wandered through the town to test devotion.

🍞 She went door to door asking for food and water, but no one served her. Everyone ignored her.

💛 In the same town, a poor woman lived. She invited the old woman into her home respectfully and served cold food and water with devotion and love.

⚡ After some time, a terrible disease like smallpox spread throughout the town. People were terrified.

🌿 However, the house of the poor woman who had served Mata remained safe, and her entire family was protected.

🙏 The townspeople realized their mistake, asked for forgiveness, and began worshipping Sheetala Mata sincerely.

✨ Pleased with their devotion, Sheetala Mata freed the entire town from disease.

🌸 Lesson from the Story 🌸
